Configuring your MS-DOS properly

This is by far the best such utility I've found, is one of the only such utilities that is completely free and not crippled, and is even under reasonably active development. As a bonus, it even can even perform a install emm386 CPU benchmark. If you have any questions about what's in your computer or how it's performing, this is a very worthwhile utility. Snarf is a simple screenshot utility for DOS. It doesn't install emm386 much in the way of options, but it works well in my testing. Screen Thief is another screenshot utility. That seems to be expected behavior and I can't find a way to fix that, and that's a deal breaker for install emm386. Since this is of somewhat limited practical use I won't spend much time covering the details, but it's a quite nice remote-access solution if that's something you need. A couple other options that might fit the bill are Remoter and Tiny. Installation and configuration is a bit wonky, so I recommend reading the included ansiplus. It was a real problem for windows Me PCs. Set command needed as a global environment variable in autoexec. SYS file entries are now provided by default in IO. BAT to start Windows. During the initial installation, the configuration files are preserved backed up when found and any retained copy retained for backward compatibility with certain applications and drivers may contain many "REMed" entries removing possible conflicting TSRs entries or drivers considered unnecessary for proper operation in the Windows used. That means that files written to the hard disk will not be written immidiately, but rather when either the cache is install emm386 or when smartdrive thinks it would be a good time to do so.

My suggestion is that you do not load smartdrive by default, but rather from command line if you want to make many file operations copy, install emm386 etc. If you have completed your work reboot your machine after a pause of 15sec to give smartdrive time to flush its buffer. After reboot smartdrive is not longer active and you're on the save side again.

Windows install emm386 many ways of manipulating the system core. I only suggest one here, because too much damage can be done by twiddling in win. If you want to make a new installation of windows95 go to your local install emm386 dealer and buy one of those "windows magazine" which titles every three month " new tricks for improving windows speed".
